|Description:||The Area of Need Policy and Guidelines – WA Health has been amended to comply with new legislation the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law (WA) Act 2010 effective 18 October 2010. All States and Territories have enacted the National Law and in WA it replaces the Medical Practitioner Act 2008 (WA). Section 67(5) pertaining to AoN has amendments to existing processes and terminologies.|

Area of Need Policy and Guidelines – WA Health
The WA Health Area of Need Policy and Guidelines have been amended in accordance with the WA Health Workforce Policy Development Framework.
If employing organisations are unable to recruit an Australian trained doctor to a vacant position, WA Health will provide them with the relevant assessment criteria and guidelines to enable them to apply to recruit an international medical graduate.
This policy and guidelines describe the process to follow when applying for an Area of Need determination for a specific medical position. This process needs to be followed by all persons working in the Western Australian (WA) Government health sector, the private health sector and any other individuals or organisations.
For the purposes of this policy and guidelines, the WA Government health sector is known as

This is a state wide policy and supersedes all policies and guidelines related to Areas of Need (formerly known as Unmet Area of Need) in WA Health.
