Nurses Ė Payment for Patient Escorting Duties
As part of their duties, nurses are occasionally required to travel in order to escort a patient to or from another Health Service or country. The relevant Award and Agreement do not address how employees are to be paid when undertaking these duties.
This Operational Circular provides a guideline as to the appropriate payment to be made to nurses performing patient escorting duties.
Prior to a nurse undertaking patient escorting duties, managers are to ensure the nurse understands and agrees to the associated payments. Where there is flexibility for the option of time off in lieu to be agreed, managers are to ensure that these arrangements are determined prior to the nurse undertaking the duties.
The period from when the nurse collects the patient until the nurse returns to the hospital can be divided into three time periods, working time, travelling time and free time.
